Cheviots Challenge
Entry Details
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE ENTRY DETAILS BELOW BEFORE COMPLETING YOUR ENTRY FORM.

Our 27th Cheviots Challenge will take place on Saturday 23rd AUGUST 2008 and will start and finish at Alwinton. There are two event ( a long and short route) both are designed as a personal challenge and NOT A COMPETITION. It is a physically demanding event requiring personal fitness, navigational skills and the ability to endure up to 12 hours in the field, hence the emphasis on recommended equipment. See kit list for further details. Furthermore, as both events require physical exercise, you are advised, that if you are not used to this type of exertion, to seek medical advice from your GP before you make an entry.

There is a choice of route. The long route will be about 25 miles and entails about 4000ft of climbing. The short route is about 18 miles..ish and over 3000 feet of climbing. Both routes include, Bloodybush Edge. On the day of the event, you will receive a route card and a photocopy map giving details of the route. YOU WILL REQUIRE: O/S Outdoor LEISURE MAP 16 or Landranger Map 80. These maps and other equipment and a good deal of helpful advice can be obtaned from Outdoor World in Whitle Bay, England

Checkpoints on the route must be visited before the closing time shown on the route card. All checkpoints can provide First Aid and one or more will provide refreshments. Food and drink will be available at the finish. Participants completing the event between 0800 and 2000 hrs will be awarded a certificate upon presentation of a completed route card.

Rules

The safe and successful running of the event depends upon you following the simple rules detailed below.

Part A. General
    1. You will be provided with a numbered route card, which MUST be recorded and punched at each checkpoint.
    2. You MUST follow the route given to you – we do not have permission to use any other.
    3. If you choose to withdraw during the event, you MUST hand your route card to an official. (If you doubt your ability to complete the event, please remember that some of the checkpoints are remote and a long way from the start).
    4. Persons under the age of 18 years MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This event is unsuitable for persons under 14 years of age.
    5. Officials will recommend withdrawal to anyone they consider unfit to continue or unlikely to complete the route in the time allowed. Persons ignoring such recommendations will cease to be the responsibility of the organisers.
    6. Please follow the Country Code.
    7. To comply with landowners’ requests, DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
    8. Seek medical advice from your GP if you are not used to this type if physical exercise before you make an entry.
Part B. Equipment

An Equipment Check List MUST be completed before starting the event.

As a minimum, all persons will use or carry with them: -

  1. Strong footwear. Either walking boots or fell running shoes designed for such an event
  2. Waterproof top and trousers.
  3. An exposure (bivvi) bag
  4. Reserve food (dried fruit, chocolate, mint cake, glucose tablets etc) and a hot drink in a suitable container.
  5. Spare sweater or similar warm garment.
  6. A working torch. (six flashes in an emergency, repeated every minute. )
  7. A whistle (six blasts in an emergency, repeated every minute.)
  8. A simple first aid kit (including crepe bandage and adhesive plasters)*.
  9. A compass (Silva or equivalent)*
  10. The relevant maps for the route. See above*
  11. If a mobile is carried make sure the organisers know its number.

*Persons travelling in groups may share these items ON THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE PARTY WILL NOT SPLIT UP.

The above list is a recommended minimum and the organisers will accept no responsibility for anyone failing to comply with these recommendations. Interpretation of these rules rests with the Organisers.

Part C. Times
  1. The event starts at 0800 hours (do not start before 0800 as the checkpoints may not be open when you reach them).
  2. You may start at any time between 0800hrs & 0900hrs but you must still reach the checkpoints before their closing times.
  3. Registration begins at 0700 hrs and you should report at least 10 minutes before you intend to start.
Part D. Miscellaneous

Camping will be available at free, behind the Rose an Thistle, Alwinton.

The organisers reserve the right to modify or cancel the event should the Team be involved in a Search and Rescue operation. If cancellation occurs, half the entry fee will be returned.

Sorry about all the rules but in the interest of your safety, we feel they are necessary. Please come along and have a hard but enjoyable day in the hills!

All entries must be made on an official entry form and accompanied by the Entry Fee of £13.00.Please include STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE.

Photocopies of this entry form are acceptable. Closing date: 11th August 2008. Last minute entries will be made on the day, although no souvenir T-shirt will be available. Please ensure you bring with you a completed entry form and kit list.
